Critical care nurses are tasked with the daunting responsibility of taking care of those who are afflicted with life-threatening illnesses. The courage, perseverance, and passion required by their job is limitless and every day they bring all of this and more to meet the demands of their noble profession.
This dedication to their calling is recognized and honored by their peers through the annual convention of the Critical Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCNAPI) held last Feb. 24 at the Novotel Hotel in Quezon City.
“There are many challenges in ICU or in critical care. And every day, there are critical care nurses who champion the patients. A good bedside nurse helps patients get well through provisions of dependent, interdependent and independent nursing practice. We are giving recognition to our champions at the bedside because it is how they are designed,” CCNAPI National President Maria Isabelita C. Rogado said.
The two-day convention saw various lectures, debates and workshops all meant to educate these professionals about the current breakthroughs and trends in their highly-specialized field. One of the sponsors of this year’s convention is HealthSolutions, the distributor of GE Healthcare patient monitoring products, who helped further the relevant discussion through the efforts of GE’s Dr. Joseph C. Abueg who discussed capnography, a way to measure the carbon dioxide in the breath of a patient. This is used in critical care to closely monitor the breathing of the patient.
“The critical care nurses should not just learn about the clinical aspects. These forum should also provide them with the legal, ethical, cultural, spiritual dimensions and even update them of the current practices,” Rogado said.
CCNAPI is the national organization of nurses interested in the field of critical care nursing. It was formed in 1975 and was incorporated in 1977. Rogado reveals that in four decades, the organization had undergone a lot of improvement leading to continuous professional development curriculum.
“Safe quality patient care is achieved if you are informed. Primary to how you behave is the education. We pride ourselves to be considered as advocates of patients,” Rogado adds.
